Mid-Century Modern Home - Kitchen

We've got something exciting to share with you all. We're diving into our first official renovation and flip project at Arcola Studios. It's a significant milestone for us, and we're eager to get our hands dirty. We've been patiently scouting for the right property to join the Arcola Properties portfolio.

We've finally found the perfect fit.

The project is a substantial 3,500 sqft single-family home, nestled comfortably in the serene neighborhood of Potomac, Maryland, on Korman Drive. This property has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and we're even considering adding a half bath. Oh, and did we mention it comes with a backyard pool? The scope is vast - we're looking at a comprehensive renovation touching every corner of the house, particularly focusing on the kitchen and master suite.

This mid-century modern home, built in the character-filled 1970s, is a split-level property with plenty of natural light. The first major task we're tackling is the kitchen. The current layout is somewhat enclosed, but we've got a vision to create an open, integrated space that connects with the family/dining room and hallway area.

Of course, there are structural considerations. We've got a column and a duct to work around, but after consulting with structural and mechanical engineers, we've figured out a way forward. We're moving the duct to the wall side, removing the two walls, and adding some extra support for safety and stability.

In terms of the exterior, we'll be closing up the windows and sliding doors. We're doing this to ensure we have plenty of cabinet space, given the open floor plan. It also helps us maintain the lateral bracing of the exterior walls, as we're removing the interior wall.

The design concept for the house is simple but impactful.

We want to highlight the pool and make it visible from key areas inside, such as the kitchen. With the large windows on the east and west sides of the house, the morning light should provide a lovely, natural ambiance.

In the kitchen, we're planning a spacious island - it's a natural gathering spot and central to our design. We've planned a layout with plenty of room to move around, a high-quality 36” range with a 42” hood range, and thoughtfully placed cabinetry. While we initially considered a walk-in pantry, we've ultimately prioritized a larger, more open kitchen space.

So that's the update on our first renovation project. We're eager to get to work on this mid-century home, modernizing it while maintaining its unique character. We'll be sure to share more about our progress as we move forward with the project.
